Jumpstart Pro Tips: Ship with dark or light mode but not both
September 16, 2024
The big idea: Launching your prototype, MVP or Version 1.0 fast is key. And to do that you've got to cut out non-essential features that slow down design and development.
Jumpstart Pro comes out of the box with support for both light and dark mode via TailwindCSS. But I don't recommend using it.
Avoid doubling your work: Supporting both light and dark mode in your initial app is tempting but avoid it. Each UI feature requires double the work if you support both modes.
Why it matters: Choosing a single mode — light or dark — simplifies design and development, reduces complexity, and speeds up your launch. It allows you to gather user feedback sooner, helping fine-tune future versions.
Your move: Streamline your UI. Decide on light or dark mode based on your audience's needs and the environments where they’ll use your product.
Quick tip: Light mode suits well-lit settings and professionals. Dark mode is popular among younger users and can extend battery life on OLED screens.
Keep in mind: This isn't a permanent decision. You can introduce the other mode later. The goal is to get to version 1.0 fast with a polished, functional product.
Bottom line: Every decision matters when racing toward version 1.0. Choosing one mode over both reduces development time and complexity, allowing a faster, more efficient launch.
